Rent
Grace period
A short window after the rent due date during which payment is still accepted without a late fee.
A grace period is a set number of days after rent is due during which a landlord accepts payment without charging a late fee. If rent is due on the 1st and the lease gives a five-day grace period, a payment on the 5th is still on time for late-fee purposes.
A grace period is not an extension of the due date — rent is still due on the 1st — it’s a cushion before a penalty applies. Some states or localities require a minimum grace period before a late fee can be charged, and the required length, if any, varies. Rules vary by state and locality — check your local law; this is general education, not legal advice.
Spell out the grace period, the due date, and any late fee together in the lease so expectations are clear. Aptoria won’t assess a late fee until the grace period you’ve set has passed.
