Agentic software is software that acts. An AI agent can perceive a situation, decide what to do, and carry out multi-step actions in the real world, such as sending a payment, dispatching a vendor, or replying to a tenant, as opposed to a passive tool that waits for a human to drive every step or a chatbot that only produces text. The distinction is between a system that suggests and a system that does.
Agency exists on a spectrum. The useful and safe part of that spectrum, especially for anything touching money or people, is bounded: the agent operates within thresholds a human sets, escalates decisions above them, and logs what it does. Unbounded agency, meaning software that acts with no limits, no reversibility, and no audit trail, is where the real risk lives, which is why serious agentic products are defined by their guardrails as much as their capabilities.
In property management, agentic software is what makes autonomous operation possible: the same agent that reads a maintenance request can also decide it fits the rules and dispatch a vetted plumber under a cost cap, then record the action, all without a human clicking through each step but never outside the limits set for it.
